Chancellor, University of Jos, Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba (Dr) Rufus Adeyemo Aladesanmi, has made a passionate appeal to the Federal Government, corporate bodies and well meaning individuals to assist in the completion of the institution’s permanent site. Speaking at the 23rd Convocation ceremony of the university, he said that the institution is faced with many challenges, particularly brain drain and lack of funds, which are slowing down the pace of development.
The Chancellor, however, commended the university management for their commitment to service which has reflected in their ranking as the fourth best university in Nigeria by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC).
He also commended students of the university for being peaceful and displaying a high sense of maturity, and patriotism during the January 17, 2010 civil unrest in Jos.
Oba Aladesanmi appealed to the federal government to approve a special grant for the completion of the university permanent site, adding that the institution is the only second generation university still in its temporary site.
Also speaking, Vice chancellor, Prof Sonni Tyoden, congratulated the 4,985 graduating students, nine of which had first class honours.
He noted that despite the situation in Jos, the university has remained resolute in her commitment and dedication to excellence, an effort that has gained national and global recognition. He said that the institution has grown in terms of its quality of staff, programmes and products despite various challenges.
Three state governors – Jonah Jang of Plateau, Isah Yuguda of Bauchi and Aliyu Akwe Doma of Nasarawa were awarded honourary doctorate degrees on the occasion in recognition of their contribution to nation building. The late Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Amb. Ignatius Ajuru was also honoured for his contribution to the development of the institution.
The best graduating student, Ikeuba Alexander Immaanwya of Chemistry Department was full of appreciation for the knowledge and insight given to him and the other graduates to face the challenges in the larger society. He urged the students to “remain resolute, consistent, focused and dedicated to their studies in order to achieve academic excellence.”
