….As students hold congress
The Department of Mass Communication, University of Jos has reiterated its commitment to achieving academic excellence and maintaining its pacesetting status in the University of Jos. The Head of Department, Dr Christy Best disclosed this at the first Association of Mass Communication Students (AMCOMS) Congress meeting held at the university’s permanent site.
She admonished the students to remain focused and settle for nothing less than the best in academics, leadership and morals, urging them to strive to build a good name and reputation for the department and the university.
Dr Best also congratulated the department’s pioneering AMCOMS executive committee for their surprise package of providing wireless public address systems to the students to enhance lecture delivery. She expressed happiness and described their initiative as “very thoughtful, supportive and a good foundation for succeeding executives”.
Speaking further, she noted that “the department has beautiful things in stock for students, like the Honours Society, which is aimed at promoting, nurturing and encouraging leadership, academic and social excellence among students”.
Presenting the public address systems to the various level representatives, Prof Augustine Ufua Enahoro commended the student leaders for the wonderful feat which was a thoughtful response to the need of the department. He advised the students to “handle the systems as personal property and use them only for the educational purpose for which they were bought”.
Responding, president of AMCOMS, Mr Henry Adamu expressed profound appreciation to the department and students for their cooperation and promised that they were “bent on giving their best and will not put up any mediocre performance in the bid to take the department to the next level”.
Consequently, the library and constitution drafting committees saddled with the responsibility of setting up a library and working out a new code of conduct for students were inaugurated by the president. According to Mr Adamu, “despite the dearth of funds, we are optimistic of seeing out the completion of projects initiated by my team, with the collaboration of staff and students, in no distant time.”
