The Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Jos has graduated 105 new doctors with a charge to them to uphold ethical principles and shun unacceptable medical practices.
Registrar of Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria Dr. A. A. Ibrahim gave the charge at the induction of the new doctors held at the institution’s Multipurpose Auditorium.
Represented by Dr. Emmanuel Osuagwu, he cautioned them against unethical practices such as issuing false medical certificates or activities unknown to medical practice such as breeding and peddling of babies as some have been known to do.
He said it was imperative for them to register with the council so as not to be tagged a quack.
Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Sonni Tyoden who spoke in a similar vein urged them to be good ambassadors of the university and be guided always by the oath they have taken.
Tyoden who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Benjamin Ugwu said they should aim at the highest standards of practice and make the care of human life their primary concern.
He said the university invested a lot in the training of the new doctors disclosing that a multipurpose laboratory and two lecture halls had been completed at the permanent site of the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) at Lamingo to aid their training.
He added that the University through a special grant from the Education Trust Fund (ETF), is in process of providing state-of- the- art structures for a new College of Medicine at the JUTH permanent site.
Dean, Faculty of Medical Science university, Prof. Nuhu Dakum said medical training the world over is unique and the faculty would continue to maintain the standards, culture and tradition for which it is known.
He urged the graduates to commit themselves to positive deeds for edification and upliftment of the image of the university and to specialize in Human Medicine in order to contribute their quota to the service of mankind.
He said with the recent national ranking of University of Jos as the third best University in the country, the Faculty looks forward to the take-off the College of Medicine.
Responding on behalf of the new doctors, Dr. Lawson Bode expressed appreciation to all who contributed to their success especially their lecturers and parents.
