Renown Mass Communication academic, Professor Ralph Akinfeleye has expressed delight with the steady development of the Department of Mass Communication of the University of Jos.
He stated this during a three-day visit to the department where he acted as External Assessor at an interview for prospective lecturers.
He was particularly happy with the take off of the Campus FM where he granted a live interview in the course of his tour of the department in company of the Head of Department, Dr (Mrs) Christiana G.E. Best and Professor Augustine-Ufua Enahoro.
The distinguished academic who is Head, Department of Mass Communication of University of Lagos said: “I am highly delighted to be associated with the good story of the department and I will like to congratulate you for being able to get your broadcast license”.
He gave the assurance that the cordial relationship between him and the department would continue and promised to be present at the International Conference on “The Africa Media and Peace Building” being co-organized by the department and the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies of the university, scheduled for June 5-9.
In a chat with Unijos Echo, he described information as a powerful tool for the establishment and sustenance of democracy anywhere in the world.
“We thank God that the government is now understanding the role of the media in national development”, he said in reference to the granting of broadcast licenses to 27 tertiary institutions by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
Speaking earlier, Prof. Enahoro thanked him for the visit and acknowledged the immense role he played in helping the Mass Communication programme of the university to be well established.
Professor Akinfeleye is a recipient of numerous awards in recognition of his contribution to media education and practice in Nigeria.
