PREPARATIONS IN TOP GEAR FOR PEACE CONFERENCE

Preparations are in top for the International Conference on Media and Peace Building in Africa holding at the University of Jos, Nigeria from June 5-9.

The Department of Mass Communication, is collaborating with the Centre for Conflict Management and Peace Studies of the institution to organize the conference.

The conference provides a platform for scholars and students, practitioners and professionals, traditional, religious and community leaders to discuss the positive and negative effects of African Media on Peace Building.

The conference which is the first in a series would examine media and their impact on peace and conflict in families, communities, workplaces, schools, and across nations while encouraging and enhancing peace through media.

Papers covering, Community Broadcasting, Civil Discourse and Dialogue, Collaboration, Conflict Prevention and Management, Culture, Democracy, Education, Gender, Globalization, Good Governance, Human Rights, Intercultural and Interethnic Communication, Leadership, Mindfulness, Nationalism, Negotiation, New Media, Peace Building, Peace Journalism, Politics, Public Relations, Reconciliation, Religion and Faith, Security, Strategic and Crisis Communication, Training, Women and Peace, are to be presented at the conference.

Faculty in the Department of Mass Communication have practical expertise in peace and conflict studies, media production, evaluation, providing media criticism and conducting communication effects research.

The over 500 undergraduate students in the Department are taught to be both informed consumers and ethical producers of media content across various platforms and communication channels.  The Department of Mass Communication is the home of the Echo Online newspaper the only online student newspaper in Africa (accessible at unijosecho.com) and the university radio station.

Since 2003 the Centre for Conflict Management and Peace Studies has provided training to peace practitioners and has supported scholars studying peace and conflict locally, nationally within Nigeria, and internationally across Africa and beyond.

The Centre offers post-graduate diplomas and Master’s degrees in peace and conflict studies and provides resources to the local community for understanding conflict management through its library.  The Centre is affiliated with the United Nations mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) and Bradford University, UK.
