Nigerian youth especially leaders of Students Union Government and various associations on campus have been urged to shun all forms of corruption.
Head, Department of Economics, University of Jos, Professor Ishmael Ogboru stated this at a public lecture organized by the National Youth Service Corps Community Development Group in collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Club held at the Law Auditorium of the institution.
Professor Ogboru who spoke on “Anticorruption Crusade: The Role of the Nigerian Youth” said corruption at any level was bad and could destroy the Nigerian youth as leaders of tomorrow.
He decried the rate of corruption among students’ leaders in Nigerian tertiary institutions, warning them against the mentality that “if you cannot beat them, join them” and other unwholesome practices that could impede their career in life.
He added that for any meaningful development to take place, the youth must rise to the challenges of poverty and fight corruption with all passion and vigor as well as promote the culture of hard work and dignity of labour.
Also speaking, former Dean, Faculty of Law, Professor Jamila Nasir, commended the organizers for the initiative stressing that corruption is Nigeria’s biggest challenge today and it beholds on the youth who are future leaders to fight the menace for the development of the nation.
Earlier, President of EFCC Club who is a serving youth corps member, Mr. Richard Famuyiwa, said corruption accounts for Nigeria’s underdevelopment as a nation, noting that the Nigerian youth have misplaced their priorities hence the need to reposition them at the forefront of the campaign against corruption.
On his part the President of Student Union Government (SUG), University of Jos Mr Aluta Nantok expressed delight at the timely lecture especially now that student’s leaders on campus see their position as civil servants who demand jumbo pay to the detriment of others.
Nantok implored the youth to be agents of transformation and to speak up against corruption as “the future of Nigeria lies in our hands”.
