The Muslim community in the University of Jos has joined their counterparts worldwide to observe the 30 –day fasting in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
The Holy Qu’ran describes observance of the holy month of Ramadan as one of the five pillars of Islam, which all adult Muslims must perform. Compulsory for all practicing Muslims, it involves abstinence from eating and drinking from morning until nightfall.
Speaking to Unijos Echo, a Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Jos, Prof. Muslih T. Yahya described the exercise as important in Islam.
According to him, “Ramadan is the month in which the Holy Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) as mentioned in the Qur’an itself.”
“It’s a month of spiritual rejuvenation; re-awakening and a month that helps one get closer to God”, he added.
The Imam of the University of Jos Central Mosque, Uthman Jabir Meekail, gave another perspective saying, “Looking at the meaning of Ramadan linguistically and technically, it means abstinence and this means we should abstain from anything that can spoil our fast”.
He listed lying, cheating and adultery as sinful practices that could defile one’s fast.
He encouraged students and all Muslims to “engage in the recitation of the glorious Qur’an in this month and shut aside all idle talk.”
The president of Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Unijos chapter, Yahya bin Yahya expressed hope that Allah would reward observers of the fast with entry into paradise.
The month of Ramadan usually begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon and ends with the celebration of Eid el-Fitr.
