MASS COMMUNICATION STUDENTS HOLD CULTURE DAY

Communication and culture have been described as essential to the propagation of the norms and heritage of a people.

A lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication University of Jos, Dr. John Galadima made this known in a lecture titled “Culture and Communication” at the Cultural Day celebration of the Association of Mass Communication Students (AMCOMS)Week held at the permanent site complex of the institution.

Dr. Galadima noted that every society has its standard of doing things which is also binding on members while communication serves as a revolving point on which culture derives its foundation.

He stressed that people should not neglect their mother tongue in the name of modernization, adding many languages in Nigeria will soon go into extinction because people no longer speak them.

He reiterated that culture can be borrowed or shared by people from different cultural background hence the need for students to uphold motto of the university -Discipline and Dedication- which various cultures preach.

Earlier in her opening remark, the Vice President of the Association of Mass Communication Students Miss Jacklyn Dakat (AMCOMS) said culture is a binding force in any given society.

She urged students to embrace their culture so as to revive them especially in their way of dressing and daily interaction as well as all that is embedded in them.

Various cultural displays and different traditional wears from the six geopolitical zones of the country were featured to the admiration of staff and students.

There was dancing competition which saw Sophie Keyen emerging as Miss Culture from the female category and Buetsen Maurice emerging as Mr. Culture from the male category.

A cross section of the students interviewed expressed delight for being part of the cultural day and pledged to continue to be proud of their culture.
