In her bid to curtail indecent dressing, the Department of English, University of Jos has introduced a dress code for her students.

Dr. Amaka Azuike, who spoke with our correspondents said the department made the move to address the issues of provocative dressing among students, adding that it would make them dress modestly and also stand out anywhere they found themselves.

According to her, the initiative was also part of efforts to unite the students, inculcate a sense of responsibility, as well as mould a good character in them.

She said every student in the department is required to appear in the new dress code which is a dark green shirt, a black trouser or skirt and a black tie, noting that punitive measures would be taken against defaulters.

“Any student that disobeys or fails to comply will be sent out of the class and as a result may miss lectures and even tests”, she said.

Dr. Azuike, who is a senior lecturer in the department added that the introduction of dress code for students was no longer a new phenomenon in Nigerian Universities, noting that the Departments of Mass Communication, Physics and many others in the University of Jos had set the pace and should be commended.

Meanwhile, students of the department have welcomed the idea of the dress code. Mafeng Davou, Simeon Zion and Roland Ferguson all of 200 Level, in separate interviews, said the introduction of the dress code should be commended.

They said the colours signified the dignity, liveliness and productivity of the department for which they are delighted.
