The Health Centre of the University of Jos recorded 100 related cases of cholera among students following the outbreak of the epidemic in Plateau State last month.
Acting Director of the University Health Centre, Dr. Mogbo Samuel, disclosed this to Unijos Echo. A specialist physician and cardiologist, Dr. Samuel said the health centre was ready to cope with the epidemic within the limit and capacity of the facility.
He stressed no death was recorded from the epidemic while severe cases are referred to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) at Lamingo.
“The health centre is working in conjunction with the Directorate of Students Affairs and lecturers to enlighten the students on the symptoms of the illness and personal and community hygiene”, he said.
A senior laboratory scientist at the health centre, Mr. Achu Etta listed “frequent stooling, vomiting, weakness and dehydration” as common symptoms of cholera.
He said the illness can be treated with oral rehydration solutions adding, “it is advisable to immediately report to the medical personnel for treatment as cholera can kill within 24 hours after the onset of symptoms”.
The University of Jos Information Office had earlier issued a circular captioned “Health Alert” to warn members of the University community of the outbreak of the epidemic.
The circular entreated members of the University community to engage in hygiene activities such as washing of hands with soap or ash after using the toilet, boiling water before drinking, cooking food properly, and washing raw foods like fruits before eating.
The causative agent of cholera is the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It has been linked to lack of clean water supply and inadequate faecal waste disposal.
