The Deputy Registrar, Information and Publications, University of Jos, Mr. Steve Otowo has charged young and upcoming mass media practitioners to brace up and adapt to the dynamics of the industry if they are to succeed.
He gave the charge during a courtesy visit paid to his office by student reporters from Unijos Echo.
Mr. Otowo, a veteran journalist who started his career with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) explained that the mass media have over the years, witnessed some major changes with improved technology and media content featuring prominently.
He noted that the Information and Publications Unit has been contributing to ensuring stability in the academic environment through its proactive and effective management of the information it disseminates to its publics.
He cited instances where intervention by the office had prevented the escalation of violence within the university, especially during the past series of crises the engulfed Plateau State.
“The timely response from the office”, Otowo said, “helped to calm both the students and their parents and restored normalcy in the institution.”
Contributing, another officer in the unit, Mr. Abdullahi Abdullahi pointed out that the department succeeds in its information management function because “it follows laid down procedures guiding the Public Relations profession.”
Also speaking, Mr. Anthony Okoka said support for the unit from the university management was assisting the department to perform maximally its role as the information hub of the University.
