Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Hayward Mafuyai has promised to take the university to a higher level by ensuring that admission into the institution is based strictly on merit.
He stated this while receiving officials of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution who paid him a courtesy call.
He said he was determined to ensure that majority of those who gain admission into the institution come on merit adding, “anything that allows for admission that 80 per cent of people admitted do not come in based on merit is not good”.
Professor Mafuyai said time has come for people to become aware that they can get admission into the university without knowing anyone but based on hard work and merit.
He said people can now apply, sit at home and see their names in the newspaper that they have got admission based on merit and not because you know someone in power.
The vice chancellor assured that the admission list will be based on structured merit design research that can be randomized to make sure that every aspect is included adding that he is ready to take the bull by the horns to “restore the good image of this great university”.
He informed the student union of the lifting of the ban on the university medical programme and assured them that the medical students that were dropped from the programme would be taken care of by the university.
