The University of Jos will on Saturday award 55 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees out of a total of 11, 373 graduating students at its 25th Convocation Ceremony.
Vice Chancellor of re institution, Professor Hayward Mafuyai who disclosed this at a pre-convocation press briefing said the conferment of degrees would be the climax of the series of events lined up for the convocation.
He said apart from the doctorates, 669 should be awarded Masters degrees while five of the first degree graduands are in first class, 637 in second class upper and 4,953 in second class lower divisions.
He said this year’s convocation would be significant because the graduands would collect their certificates during the convocation or immediately after adding that the era of graduands working with testimonials because certificates were not ready was over.
According to the vice chancellor, Governor Adams Oshiomhole will this afternoon (Wednesday) deliver the Convocation Lecture entitled “the Imperatives of Good Governance in Nigeria” after the Drama and Variety Show that would take place at the Open Air Theatre of the university.
It will be followed on Thursday by the presentation of Distinguished Philanthropic Awards to the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the T.Y. Danjuma Foundation for their contribution to humanity in various ways.
“These foundations, which were borne out of the kind heartedness of two very distinguished and accomplished individuals, Andrew Carnegie and General Theophilus Danjuma, though of deferent generations, are committed to the dissemination of knowledge and upliftment of the human person”, he explained.
Also to be honored is former skipper of the national team, Nwankwo Kanu who is to receive a Masters degree Honoraris Causa for his outstanding achievements in sports and philanthropy through the Kanu Heart Foundation.
