The Association of Mass Communication Students (AMCOMS), University of Jos began its week on Wednesday, September 12 in grand style, with the Corporate Old School Day and a lecture on the theme “Striving for Professional Excellence in Journalism in Nigeria”.
The day was colourful with students of the department appearing in different old school attires and displaying various forms of artistic performances such as jokes, dances, poems, fashion parade and others.
Speaking in an interview with Unijos Echoonline, the President of the association, Mr. Richard Maiwada said the week provides avenues were students learn in a completely relaxed atmosphere, interact and know each other better as they equip themselves for future challenges adding that he is encouraged by the presence of the lecturers during the programme.
He promised the students and staff of the department a fun-filled week as there is a variety of programmes carefully selected and designed by the planning committee for the week.
“It is a tradition in the department that every session, students and staff come together to celebrate culture and social activities. We just had the corporate old school day; tomorrow will feature the cultural day. On Friday, we’ll have sports and the grand finale which will include dinner, award night and pageantry holds on Sunday at Treasure Inn Suite, Rayfield.” He added.
Present at the day’s event were the Acting Head of Department, Dr. John Galadima, the Staff adviser and Mr. Taye Obateru. Other lecturers of the department present were Mr. Godfrey Danaan, Mr. Darlington Amorighoye, Mr. Francis Leman and Mr. Mabas Akila.
Highlights of the event included the old school dance competition among lecturers as Mr. Darlington Amorighoye came tops with Mr. Mabas Akila and Mr. Taye Obateru as first and second runners up.
The next day saw students beautifully and gorgeously dressed in various cultural attires with warm smiles gracing their pretty faces as they flaunted and paraded around the sky bank hall, venue for the AMCOMS Cultural Day.
They represented different Nigerian cultures – Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Igala, Berom, Edo, Idoma and many other tribes and states.
The event started with a dance competition among students of various levels in the department. After the strenuous but enjoyable exercise of swinging and wining of their bodies, the following emerged winners; Nanret Samuel 100level, Adeyongo Shadrack 200level, Obadum Roseline 300level and Ojima Gloria 400level.
The cultural day celebration also witnessed the unveiling of the AMCOMS week cake, iced with the department’s colours of sky blue and red. The cutting of the cake was done by lecturers and students alike.
