The Faculty of a Medical Sciences of the University of Jos is expected to be upgraded to a college any time from now.
The Dean of the faculty, Prof. Nuhu Dakum who disclosed this to Unijos Echo Online said upgrading the faculty to a college would give it some degree of autonomy and more room for expansion as well as make for better running of activities in the faculty.
“This semi-autonomy would enable us as a faculty to tackle some minute administrative and managerial problems without bothering the management of the University”, he said.
He said upgrading the faculty to a college was a stipulation of the National Universities Commission (NUC) for it to continue to enjoy accreditation.
The dean noted that despite financial constraints which is affecting the faculty’s ability to carry out research as much as it would have loved to, products of the faculty are properly groomed and can compete favorably anywhere in the world.
This, he said, is achieved through painstaking efforts to ensure discipline and excellence disclosing that the faculty is involved in research collaborations with six medical schools in the United States of America.
Meanwhile, the Department of Nursing in the faculty has graduated two sets of students since it received accreditation from the Nigerian University Commission (NUC).
This was made known to Unijos Echo Online by the Head of Department Dr. Mrs. Opaleye, who said the success rate is a hundred per cent adding that some of the are already practicing nurses.
According to her, students of the department are made to write midwifery professional examination before their graduation to ensure the best nurses are produced.
She said the department strives towards excellence at all levels despite obvious constraints because it is self-motivated.
