A 400 Level Student of the Faculty of Law, University of Jos, Gowon Maxwell Nengak has emerged President of the Law Students Society (LSS), defeating his opponent Amos Menina with 91 votes.
The election in which diploma and undergraduate students of the faculty participated,was adjudged by observers as one of the most transparent in the history of the society.
Chairman of the election committee, Sunday Robert, explained that there were nine vacant positions out of which four – Treasurer, Public Relations Officer, Director of Socials and Director of Sports had single candidates.
He said the committee tried to give the Law students the best in terms of voting materials which were fraud proof in addition to the compilation of a comprehensive list of students of the faculty, display of Identity cards and presentation of stamped school fees receipt before the students were allowed to cast their votes.
It was learnt that two of the four initial aspirants for the position of President stepped down to make a race a straight one between Gowon and Menina.
Gowon had in a pre-election interview told Unijos Echo Online said he is passionate about effective change and if given the mandate, he will organise a centenary lecture in May this year, as well as provide a place for the student of the faculty to rest while waiting for lectures.
The election which held under tight security had observers and monitors from the Students Union Government (SUG), the ECOWAS Students and Youth Assembly, among others.
