The Faculty of Law is preparing for an accreditation visit from Council on Legal Education in its bid to increase the approved slots for the faculty in the Nigerian Law School.
The Deputy Dean, Professor Dominic Asada, who disclosed that to Unijos Echo Online said this became necessary the current slot of 170 could no longer take care of the number of students produced by the faculty in an academic session.
He said to accreditation team would examine physical facilities and staff strength during the visit to determine the faculty’s eligibility for additional slots.
He expressed delight that students of the faculty were able to make it to law school despite last year’s strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which he said was made possible with the support of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Hayward Mafuyai.
According to Asada, the faculty foresaw the strike and intensified lectures weekdays and weekends to cover their academic curriculum which enable the 500-level students take their final exams in June 2013 before the strike commenced.
He extolled the leadership qualities of the vice chancellor saying, without his understanding and encouragement, the faculty would not have been able to achieve that ‘feat’.
The deputy dean commended the lecturers for their untiring zeal for the success of the faculty despite challenges such as lack of a pool vehicles in the faculty to facilitate movement especially to conferences or seminars outside Jos.
He expressed the faculty’s readiness to support and encourage their students who intend to participate in international competition as it will increase their intellectual capabilities.
