Students of the University of Jos have been enjoined to strive for excellence in their academic pursuit to enable them achieve their potentials.
Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Hayward Mafuyai said this in a message to the orientation programme organized for students of the Institute of Education.
Represented by the Deputy Director of the Institute, Professor John Manklik, he advised them to take advantage of the available academic opportunities to develop their capabilities.
Registrar of the university, Barrister Jili Dandam was represented by Mr Patrick Opara, who introduced himself as a member of the university’s “third matriculants”.
He traced the history of the institution to 1971 when it started as a campus of the University of Ibadan, in the Gangare area of Jos.
According to him, “Education was the only other course aside science at the university’s take-off and it was in the pre-degree class. The university attained full autonomy in October 1975 at this present Bauch Road (Bauchi Road Campus) with just three faculties. Today, we have nine different faculties in operation”.
He added that the Institute of Education was established in 1995 as an auxiliary of the mother faculty of education to cater for non- National Universities Commission (NUC) funded courses.
Other dignitaries took their turns to contribute to the lecture according to their areas of specializations. Such areas include: security, academics, health and Information and communication Technology (ICT).
The event which took place at the Multipurpose Auditorium of the varsity’s main campus witnessed a large turnout of students cutting across the five levels of the institute.
The programme is a yearly event organized by the education institute and holds in the first week of resumption immediately after the completion of registration.
