The annual “Village Hostel Week” of the University of Jos has kicked off with the usual flurry of sports and socio-cultural activities.
Declaring the event open on Monday, the Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Rotgak Gofwen represented by Mr Ibrahim Tale commended the students on the spirit of socialization that has been entrenched among them over the years and urged them to keep it up for the purposes of peace and unity.
The activities lined up for the week include; sports competitions (featuring football, volleyball, basketball, tennis), dancing competition, cooking and eating competition, tug of war and more.
The ceremony opened with a novelty match between the Village Hostel community and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Unijos chapter and was promptly followed by the main game of the day; a football match between Compound 10 and Compound 12 of the hostel at the end of which Compound 12 won by 2-0.
Notable personalities who graced the opening ceremony were the Hall Officer, Mr. Emmanuel John, Kelvin Godea who represented the Base Officer, Elisha Ayuba, a hostel officer and the Governor of Students Village, Prince Justine.
Village Hostel Week is celebrated in the second semester of every academic session and is organized by the Student Union Government (SUG) of the institution.
