As the week long ceremonies outlined to mark the 40th year Anniversary of the university of Jos commence in grand style, staff and students of the university has been advised to be pro-active, creative and indulge in research activities that will move the institution to greater height.
The purpose of the exhibition was to showcase the strength of the institution and its achievement over the past 40yrs as well as provide a clear vision of the school sets out to achieve in the upcoming years.
The Academic Head of the Institution, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai remarked this while on tour of the Exhibition areas to mark the forty years anniversary of the university. The exhibition is taking place at the multipurpose auditorium basement, Anatomy and Physiology Museum and Unijos library complex, all in Bauchi Road Main Campus.
He described the efforts put in by both staff and students of the university as excellent, remarking that “I’m highly impressed with the works presented by the various departments. The environment must be conquered through research so that the economy can cease to be mono-economy”.
While inspecting the fish farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, He also challenged members of staff to come up with fish feed that is original to the university and also one that would be recognized worldwide.
From the Department of Parasitology, Unijos, Mr Nicholas Daniel during the exhibition, presented a shampoo, hand sanitizer and a scabiplus herbal ointment which was a collaborative effort of researchers in the university and National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom. Prof Mafuyai was interested to ascertain if the products have been tested and approved medically to avoid complications when used.
The response was positive as Hope Dogo from NVRI, Vom stated the herbal ointment is effective against skin infection caused by parasites, bacteria, fungal and mycotic infection, including ringworm, eczema, rashes, pimples, fleas, pile, lousiness and contact dermatitis.
Prof. Mafuyai also applauded the beautiful works created by both staff and students of the Department of Fine and Applied Art in spite of the fact that it is a new department. He said that for coming up with such great and beautiful works, they will be given extra credit.
He further stated that there’s need to conserve indigenous products and not be solely dependent on imported ones.
In the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Science, Dr.Elemukan Isaiah said, those who are visually and auditory impaired and those suffering from learning disabilities should be given equal opportunity in all spheres of life. Free tests were carried out on participants who wished to check their hearing abilities.
Some of the departments that participated in this historic event include: Faculty of Agriculture, Special Education and Rehabilitation Science, Mass Communication, Religion and Philosophy, Fine and Applied Arts, Theatre and Film Arts, Animal Husbandry, Plant Science, amongst others.
Some of the works on display ranged from varieties of indigenous cereals and legumes, mango juice extraction machine, 667 years old Hebrew Scroll, Paintings, and Sculptures.
