The novelty match between the male and female management team of the university kicked off at about 3:41pm and comprised of principal officers and senate members of University of Jos, in Unijos Primary School Field in Bauchi Road Campus.
Ten minutes into the game, the ball came crashing hard at the back of the Female team net which the joint effort of Professors Ango, and Irene Agunloye could not curtail. It was scored by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai after an awesome pass from ASUU Chairman, Unijos, Dr. Pinwuna making it 1-0 in favour of Team Mafuyai.
A surprising handball play by Mrs. Temine Lami gave the female team, led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Teresa Nmadu a goal.
After an undefeated struggle and resilience from the male team, Prof Angela Miri through a penalty kick put the female team in a comfortable position with 2-1.
Just when everyone thought the match had ended, Prof Mafuyai launched a wonderful shot into the goal post to equalize on behalf of his team mates in spite of the defense put up by the two goal keepers of Team Theresa. The changed the score board to 2-2, end of match!
“We were a better side and I gave in my best shots and converted two of my chances into goals “, said Professor Mafuyai, after the 30 minutes match.
He said the novelty match was to boost a healthy relationship among the staff and to create an avenue for them to interact with each other in a more relaxed atmosphere”.
The match was a very entertaining one as the University of Jos community came out en mass to support the teams in their endeavour. Afterward, a convocation final between the faculty of Education and Natural Sciences team, resumed. Details Later please.
The events to celebrate the University of Jos at 40 years will continue today with a Founders’ day celebration and book launch at the multipurpose hall of the Bauchi road campus of the university.
