The A.P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute, APLORI in the University of Jos has been commended for carrying on the dreams of its founding fathers 14 years after its establishment.
The commendation came from Professor Christopher Perrins, a co-founder who visited the institute recently.
He said he was impressed by the contributions and findings made by students of APLORI within the field of ornithology urging them to keep up the good work to take the institution to a height of excellence.
He explained that he decided to visit the institute which he set up with AP Leventis in 2001 to see how it had fared.
Perrins who had worked in the Zoology Department of Oxford University for many years shared his ideas and knowledge with the students during the visit.
Acting Director of APLORI Dr. Shiiwua Manu said the institute was set up on June 18, 2001 by Prof. A.P Leventis and was commissioned by the then Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar as a part of the Zoology Department in Faculty of Natural Sciences.
It would be recalled that in demonstration of his love for birds, AP Leventis, a renowned ornithologist alongside Perrins, on discovery of a special specie of birds around Laminga in Plateau State, decided to establish a research institute for the study and preservation of the different species of birds in the area.
