Students residing in Village Hostel, University of Jos, heaved a sigh of relief when recently, the school Vice Chancellor, Prof Hayward Mafuyai, commissioned a new borehole constructed at compound 5 of the hostel.

This project was made possible through a joint collaboration of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) caretaker committee and Engr. Dauda Palam – an alumnus of the institution.

In a brief ceremony, the Chairman, SUG caretaker committee, Comrade Nansak Dashe said the project was born out of the outcry by students of perennial scarcity of water supply in recent times. The student leader directed the hostel Governor to ensure that the borehole is used responsibly and efficiently.

Engr. Dauda Palam assured that the project is complete and ready for use. He also urged students and security personnel to imbibe proper maintenance culture so as to ensure durability of the facility.

Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Hayward Mafuyai observed that this gesture goes to show how creative and responsible students are, adding that the SUG should be accountable to students who pay annual dues to them. He also disclosed that management is doing all within its power to create conducive environment for learning.

The Acting Governor, Village Hostel, Comrade John Paul said the committee has proven themselves worthy and urged the host compound to monitor and keep the facility in shape. Comr. Paul called on management to help in fixing the toilet systems in the hostel and improve the power supply which is epileptic.
