ASSOC. PROF. JOHN GALADIMA PASSES ON

The Dean of Arts and Humanities, Prof. Iorapuu Tor, has commiserated with the family of the late Associate Professor John D. Galadima who passed on in the early hours of the 16th of November, 2016 at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, (JUTH) Lamingo.

Prof. Tor led a delegation of academic and non academic staff of the Department of Mass Communication to the residence of the late Assoc. Prof. Galadima at Mado Village, Tudun Wada, Jos and on his behalf, an academic staff of the Mass Communication department, Mr. Raymond Goshit who spoke in the Hausa language to the wife, children and other family members, expressed his shock on the news of the death of their colleague and assured the family of the University of Jos commitment and partnership towards the burial of Assoc. Prof. Galadima.

A representative of the family welcomed Prof. Tor alongside the acting HOD of Mass Communication, Dr. Sarah B. Lwahas and the former HOD of Mass Communication, Prof. Augustine Enahoro and disclosed that they were already making plans for a thanksgiving service to thank God for the recovery of Assoc. Prof. Galadima after he had been hospitalized for weeks at JUTH.

He also disclosed that it was a double tragedy for the family as Assoc. Prof. Galadima’s step brother also died an hour before Assoc. Prof. Galadima’s death at the village in Quan’pan LGA.

He thanked the UniJos delegation and promised to notify them of the burial preparations in due time.

Assoc. Prof. Galadima was involved in a motor accident on his way to the University of Maiduguri to sit as a panel member for a Mass Communication PhD student’s defense on August 26th, a day after he was elected the new HOD of Mass Communication. He was discharged after some weeks but continued going to JUTH for checkup and therapy. He then had to undergo a corrective surgery which was successful. Assoc. Prof. Galadima was up and about and was even sighted at the National Institute, Kuru.  On the 13th of November, he informed the Dean of Arts and some senior colleagues of the Department of his re-admittance in JUTH where he was put on an oxygen mask for three days when he eventually gave up the ghost as confirmed by his family members.

Assoc. Prof. Galadima was born in 1964 in Namu, Quan’ pan Local Government Area of Plateau State. After a six-year primary education which he received at T/R C.M. Primary School, Kopdangloe, he proceeded to Government Secondary School, Shendam. Graduating in 1984, he gained admission into the School of General Studies at Bayero University, Kano, which prepared the ground for his undergraduate studies in that university. After gaining a BA (Hons) in Mass Communication in 1989, he went to the University of Ibadan where he bagged both his MA degree in Communication and Language Arts in 1997 and his PhD in Mass Communication in 2011.

His work experience began during his National Youth Service in Kwara State where he served as a feature writer with the Herald Newspaper in Ilorin. On completion of this service year, he became the Sub-Editor and later Editor with the CityWatch Newspaper in Jos before taking up a position as a lecturer with the University of Jos in 1991.

Apart from serving as a facilitator with the Political Parties Leadership and Policy Development Centre (PPLPDC) NIPSS, Kuru, he was a visiting lecturer at the Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi and the Plateau State University, Bokkos.

Assoc. Prof. Galadima’s has participated in other community service ranging from his membership of many committees at the University of Jos to the coordinator of several programmes in the University. He stands out as a one-time UniJos branch secretary of  the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, under the chairmanship of Prof. Yakubu Pam.

To his credit are publications of high academic standard including books, chapter contributions and articles in local and international journals.
