“There is no excuse for any female to venture into prostitution.”
These were the words of Prof. Amaka Azuike, Head of the Department of English Language in a one-day seminar with the theme “Sex, Money, Stigma; the Experience and Reality.”
The seminar was organised by Ambang Juliet, Vice President of the Association of Mass Communication Students (AMCOMS) as part of activities during the AMCOMS week that took place on February 15, 2017, in the Faculty of Arts auditorium.
Prof. Azuike said that the media has really influenced the attitude and ideology of youths in this present generation regarding sex. She linked the business of sex to poverty and unemployment and highlighted the consequences which are Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STDs), death, and loss of pride and dignity among others.
She further explained that the business of sex dehumanises, exploits, and extorts females and urged the participants to have a good dress sense which leads to the saying the way you are dressed, so you will be addressed.
Dr. Sarah Lwahas, Head of the Department of Mass Communication who was also present at the seminar added that the business of sex can never be gotten over as it affects an individual psychologically.
She counselled students to shun any aspect of sexual immorality and learn from those who are ahead of them in age and experience.
Staff Adviser of the Department, Mr. Raymond Goshit, appreciated everyone who came to the event and made it a success.
The organiser of the event, Ambang Juliet told UniJos Echo that she got her inspiration from a lady who shared her story of how she was a prostitute because of her family’s disunity, lack of attention and love. Juliet further revealed that she needed to create a platform to educate students on campus prostitution.
Also, speaking with the President of AMCOMS, Simon Itse, he said that the essence of the seminar is to raise awareness of campus prostitution. He also acknowledged that the planning of the event was not easy but he was satisfied with the turnout for the event.
Kattiems Fredrick, a 100-level English Language student pointed out that the seminar was really educative.
In the same vein, Emeka Kingsley, a 100-level Mass Communication student agreed that he learnt a lot during the seminar and advised his female friends to be careful and desist from the act of sex business.
Other prestigious guests who graced the occasion were Associate Prof. Victor Ayedun-Aluma, Mr. Darlington Amorighoye and Mrs. Rhoda Dalung among other academic and non-academic staff.
There were also side attractions like comedy, spoken word, drama and music which added colour to the event.
There was also a free HIV/AIDS test organised by the Plateau AIDS Control Agency (PLACA).
The event ended with a vote of thanks by Ambang Juliet.
