Makeshift canteens which had catered for the feeding needs of students in the Naraguta Campus was demolished on the 19th of May by the University Management.
According to Pitman, a student from the Department of Building, the reason for the demolition was because of the collaboration between the University Management and the Department of Fine and Applied Arts which deemed it fit to use the canteen premises to serve as a place for field work and other assignments.
The Department of Fine and Applied Art intends to develop the said portion and put in place the necessary arts, drawings, paintings and sculptures that will be required of them.
One of the food sellers said they were ‘not chased out of the vicinity, but rather asked to relocate their businesses to a more convenient location so as to allow the Department of Fine and Applied Arts to effectively utilize the space for their academic work’.
The canteens, which was previously situated behind the Faculty of Environmental Science, has been relocated behind the Faculty of Education lecture halls complex popularly known and called by students as ‘Chibok’.
Work has since commenced at the new site allocated for the food canteens.
