200 LEVEL AND 400 LEVEL DISPLAYING THEIR TROPHIES

The 200 level class of the Department of Mass Communication aka Team Matyek were crowned champions of the just concluded AMCOMS Female Football Tournament held at the Zion football pitch recently after a match that was decided by a penalty shootout against the 400 level class aka Team Ashiekpe as both teams couldn’t have their way in the 40 minutes of regular playing time.

A goal from Moshino Innazo in the penalty shootout was all that decided the fate of the finals after all three attempts from Team Ashiekpe was blocked by their opponent’s goalkeeper.

At the beginning of the tournament, Comrade Lucky Mapak, the AMCOMS President who represented the Head of Department, Associate Professor Victor Aluma, said that, ‘this tournament should be played peacefully, in fairness and unity and should be an avenue for us to know one another so as to form a formidable team that can compete against other departments. He kicked the ball to officially declare the tournament open.

The opening match was between the 200 level and 400 level and the game witnessed goal scoring chances from both sides but ended with a goalless draw as no team was able to get the ball at the back of the net.

300 level (Leman FC) isolated themselves as none of their players were available. The officials later reached a conclusion deciding that the three levels present would play two matches each against one another and the two teams with the highest points will get set for the finals.

It was on this note that the 200 level played against 100 level, a match that ended 2 goals to nil against the 100 level. A goal from Moshino Innazo two minutes into the second half after found the back of the net with a left-foot shot saw the ball into the bottom corner of the opponent’s goal post and a goal from Blessing, few minutes into the final minutes of the match, was all the 200 level needed to give them a comfortable 2-0 win victory over 100 level to book their place in the finals of the ladies tournament.

Team Mwansat (100 level) were left dejected and disappointed after losing yet to Team Ashiekpe in their second match as they could not match up against their opponents. A brace from Ijeoma Okereke in the first opening half of the match was what decided the fate of the match as 400 level emerged victorious leaving them on the same point with the 200 level to reach the finals as well.

Speaking with the Director of Sports after the final match, Ajang Japhet, he said that ‘the tournament was his initiative and was approved by Head of the Department’ and that the main reason for the tournament is to encourage female participation in football.

He ended up by saying that ‘people should find time to work out and do some exercise because so doing will keep one fit and healthy’.
