The students in Abuja Hostel have lamented over the dilapidated condition of the common room. This was the situation when UNIJOS ECHO sampled the views of students as the first semester examinations are due to commence on the 7th of August.

A number of students did not mince words in laying bare their thoughts on the present state of the common rooms which is a disturbing eyesore and has largely hampered their studying habits.

According to Naomi Ibrahim, a student of Pharmacy, the common room lacks the ”standard of comfort’’ and therefore is not ideal for studying which is the primary purpose for which it was built. According to her, ‘’the common room has always been a motivating factor that spurs students into studying but its shabbiness has not really underscored that in every ramification lately.’’

It’s been really nothing to write home about said Bamnan Lar Joshua, a student of the Department of Quantity Surveying in whose voice contained a hint of frustration. He said, “Students make use of this common room, especially during the examination period. But its derelict state will make it almost impossible to use owing to the inadequate availability of good seats and the epileptic nature of power supply.’’

“What would have been considered a suitable option for the common room is the school’s library but it’s been months since the library was also gutted by fire. All these factors and even more have cumulated to forcing them to study in their various rooms which are quite difficult as undesirable distractions by roommates may set in” he said.

Other students interviewed called on Management to do the needful by fixing the common rooms and the library to provide an array of options for students to study as this would not only facilitate learning but also play the paramount role of propelling them to achieving academic excellence.
