The University of Jos has held its 82nd inaugural lecture titled LIVER CANCER: ARE WE PERISHING FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE?
The lecture which was delivered by Mrs. Edith Nonyelum Okeke, a professor of general internal medicine and gastroenterology, took place at the multi-purpose auditorium (MPA) Bauchi Road Campus.
According to the 82nd inaugural lecturer, the lecture was aimed at creating awareness on the prevention of liver cancer adding that it can affect anyone.
Professor Okeke said the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies tobacco as a class 1 substance that produces cancer, while others include alcohol, ionizing radiation, aflatoxin, and human Papillion, a virus (HPV). However, the focus of the presentation was primary over cell cancer (PLCC) which she said has a poor prediction level being the third most common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Jos, Professor Sebastian Seddi Maimako who was also the chairperson of the event, said the lecture was insightful and an eye opener on how to prevent the disease, hoping that many lives will be saved.
He further presented the inaugural lecturer with a gift item on behalf of the University as a commendation for a job well done.
In a separate remark, the Dean, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Professor Simon J. Yiltok, commended the Vice Chancellor while congratulating him as he marks a year as the Vice Chancellor of the University.
Professor Okeke, in her final words, appreciated everyone that has made the work a huge success, saying it was ‘like a heavy load lifted off her shoulders’ adding that ‘we can’t stop cancer but we can prevent it’.
