Activities in Nigerian Universities have come to a halt as Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the National Association of Academic Technology (NAAT) embarks on an indefinite strike, today, to press home their demands

The chairperson of JAC, UniJos chapter, Comrade Godwin Mafuyai who is also the NAAT chairperson said that the strike became necessary b the cause government has remained adamant on their demands which was made since 2009.

He further stated that the strike embarked by the unions on 12th January 2017, resulted to a memorandum of understanding with the government in which government has not met their demands.

Responding on the demands of JAC, NASU’s chairperson, UniJos chapter, Comrade Bitrus Dagwer, revealed that there are about eleven demands which include the non payment of earned allowances, lack of good governance, poor funding as against UNESCO recommendations, inadequate infrastructure in the university and abandoned projects, shortfall in the payment of salaries, university staff school/ national industrial court judgment implementation, non registration of the proposed National University Pension Commission (NUPENCO), non implementation of CONTISS 14 and 15 for technologists, problem of lack of inadequate teaching and learning facilities in the University, corruption in Nigerian system, Lack of seriousness in the negotiation of 2009 Federal Government/Union agreement and reduction of hardship of non teaching unit by Academic Staffs

The strike by JAC is seen as a setback to academic activities in the country, especially as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have been on strike for over a month.
