It has been three weeks since academic activities resumed on the University of Jos campus and all hands are on deck to ensure they get the ball rolling in good time but students have continued to face issues on account of irregular power supplies as they settle into school activities. Some of the students confirmed that parts of the hostels were without power for about a week after the resumption and that the hostels with electricity supply were dealing with constant interruptions in power supply. Other students pinned the low resumption turnout on the poor electricity supply.

In some of the hostels, including Zion Hostel the electricity issue was fixed before the Easter break but the respite was short-lived as the students had to grapple with an unstable power supply in the days following Easter. This has made it difficult for students, especially medical students who are only weeks away from their MBBS exams, to perform optimally.

Ene Emah, a student of the Department of Mass Communication expressed her frustration saying, “These past three weeks have not been easy as academic activities have resumed in earnest. We need electricity to charge our devices to deliver on deadlines but this on-off power situation has made things difficult.

She went on to say,” I believe this is a temporary issue because the school has always done incredibly well in terms of power supply.”

When asked how they have been navigating the power problem, several students said they have been coping by visiting friends who leave off campus to power up their lanterns and phones to get their assignments and other important work done.
