The Department of Mass Communication at the University of Jos extended a warm welcome to its new students during an event held at the Aliyu Akwe Doma Indoor Theatre, Faculty of Arts.
Distinguished attendees included Head of Department Associate Professor Godfrey Danaan, Staff Adviser Mr. Luka Toholde, Examination Officer Mr. Mabas Akila, Dr. James Ashiekpe, Mr. Raymond Goshit, Faculty of Arts President Aaron Kolo, and Department President Christopher Gyang Bonaventure, alongside other officials.
Head of the Department, Associate Professor Godfrey Danaan, highlighted the importance of the welcome event in aiding students to familiarize themselves with the academic environment, people, and procedures essential for achieving academic excellence. He emphasized the role of hard work in academic success and encouraged new students to view Mass Communication as their academic home, concentrating on their studies.
Mr. Mabas Akila, the Examination Officer, provided a comprehensive briefing on the department’s operations, emphasizing the necessity of completing registration, attending classes, punctuality, diligent study habits, understanding grade points, and starting the academic journey on a solid foundation.
Department President Christopher Gyang Bonaventure welcomed the new students, urging them to prioritize their academic pursuits. He advised them to strike a balance between social and academic life, create personal timetables, engage in group discussions, and seek help from lecturers when needed, emphasizing the significance of the welcome event in fostering a sense of belonging.
In response, Ali Yusuf, a 100-level student, expressed his passion for the course, aspiring to study and practice journalism. He commended the department’s discipline and expressed joy over the welcoming event.
Hyelsinta Hassan, also a 100-level student, expressed gratitude to lecturers and senior students for their support and love. She felt fulfilled studying the course and looked forward to a successful academic journey.
The Nigerian Institute for Public Relations (NIPR) University of Jos chapter extended an invitation to the new students to join NIPR, emphasizing the importance and benefits of public relations. Fidelity Bank encouraged students to open accounts with them.
The event was not only informative but also entertaining, featuring music and poetry performances by artists including Degeneral, Ejiro, DJ Keicho, Harmless, Eterlity, Wiz Lee, and others, adding a touch of excitement to the occasion.
