The Association of Veterinary Medical Students (AVMS) at the University of Jos organized a free anti-rabies campaign and vaccination program for dogs and cats in L.E.A Fudawa (Anguwan Rukuba), Jos North L.G.A, Plateau State.

The initiative was met with great enthusiasm by local residents and animal owners, who expressed gratitude for the free service.

Traditionally, the Faculty of Veterinary Science distributes free vaccinations annually on World Rabies Day, observed every 28th of September. However, this year marked a significant departure as students from the faculty took the lead in organizing a unique campaign.

The campaign received support from the National Veterinary Research Institute, and students secured free vaccines, while essential supplies like syringes and normal saline were provided by the University of Jos Veterinary Teaching Hospital, the Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association, and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria.

The collaborative efforts of final-year students who were responsible for administering vaccines, alongside their counterparts, in lower classes, and managing history-taking, resulted in the successful vaccination of 110 pets. Additionally, house-to-house vaccinations were conducted in those selected areas.

Badung Emmanuel Gyang, a 600-level student and president of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, expressed his satisfaction with the event, in his word, he said;

“I feel fulfilled and happy to have used my knowledge and skills to serve the community by hosting students.”
