The National Association of Niger State Students (NANISS) emerged victorious in the grand finale of the 2023 Non-indigenous Forum Football Competition held at the University of Jos, defeating the Nasarawa State Students Association (NASSA) in a hard-fought game.
The football match which took place at the postgraduate (P.G) hostel football field, UniJos, ended with 2-1 in favor of the National association of Niger state students.
Daniel Jack gave NANISS F.C the lead with a swift goal, just 3 minutes into the match. Minutes later, he scored a brace to double the lead for his team.
The NANISS defense was disciplined as the first half ended 2 nil. Despite piling up pressure in the other half of the match, all NASSA could get was a consolation goal from Benjamin Elisha which was not enough.
In an exclusive interview with Israel Abel, the number 10 player for the Niger State Students Association (NANISS), he expressed his joy for winning the competition, saying that the team’s hard work and perseverance had finally paid off.
He praised his teammates for their dedication and determination, and added that the win was a result of their collective effort.
The team was commended by the former SUG speaker Mr. Lakai, and the current SUG speaker who encouraged them never to settle for less at any point of their life but to always strive for higher level of achievement.
During an interview with Comrade Olamofe Godwin, the chairman of the competition’s organizers, he stressed the importance of the competition in fostering unity among students at the University of Jos. Saying that the Non-Indigenous Forum is a place where students from different backgrounds can come together to form connections and create a sense of community.
Comrade Godwin added that the forum is an important part of university life, and encourages students to get involved and participate in the various activities.
Comrade Olamofe also shared some of the challenges that the organizers faced in putting the event together. He noted that lack of funding had impacted the level of expectation for the competition, expressing his gratitude to the aspirants of the University of Jos Student Union Government (SUG) for their sponsorship and support.
Comrade Olamofe Godwin in his concluding statement told UniJos Echo that the competition is beneficial to both students and the university as a whole, adding that it provides a chance for the university to select talented players who can represent the school at the forthcoming Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) competition.
