The centre for Gender and Women’s studies (CGWS), University of Jos, convened its members and other invited guests to a public lecture in commemoration of International women’s day celebration. The event which took place at the Aliyu Akwe Doma indoor Theatre, Faulty of Arts was themed “Women and political participation: feminization of corruption”.
The vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya who was the chief host of the event while addressing the gathering during his speech applauded women for their unending support to humanity. He affirmed that critical positions being occupied by women in the university is based on merit. He said “You got to this point as a result of your hard work and you deserve it, not because you were favored by me or anyone, but because we believe in the power of a woman and whatever a man can do, a woman does it better”.
Director of Centre of Gender and women’s studies (CGWS) Professor Irene Agunloye during her speech presentation enlightened those present on how women are underrepresented in high-level positions due to gender stereotype, cultural barriers, sexual assault and the image portrayed by the media.
Professor Irene also addressed the fact that women are seen as incompetent and therefore said that it was important for every woman in the society to improve her standard, therefore progress is an essential factor in every nation when a woman leads, and most men attain greater heights through constant support of a woman.
“There is always a need to invest in a woman, if you invest in a woman, you are investing in the system ready for rescue” says Hon, Justice Sharon Tanko Ishaya, as she urged women to make a difference because God has created them to always make a difference.
Nancy Tyoden representing Doctor Rejoice Songden as the special guest of honor, Stated that women are seen as weaker vessels in the society, and such assertion must be changed, and that should begin with students of the University of Jos.
Hon. Simi Dusu, Special adviser to the Governor of Plateau state on Social welfare, who was also present, stated that corruption is not tied down to any gender, but to character and what you believe. Hon. Simi urged all those present to fight against corruption regardless of where they are, especially in the university. She concluded by challenging, and at the same time encouraging more women to register and participate in politics when the time comes because she believes in a better Nigeria.
Students of Theatre and Film Department graced and entertained the audience with their amazing display of different dances and also a short drama which advocated for greater political participation of women in the society.
