Unijos holds Workshop on Code of Conduct with Bureau of Public Service Reforms

The University of Jos, in partnership with the Presidency Code of Conduct Bureau recently held a transformative two-day workshop at the Red Chamber of the Faculty of Social Sciences to bolster compliance with asset declaration of code of conduct and combat corruption within public institutions.

The Director of the Code of Conduct Bureau Abuja branch, Mr. Daniel Okafor urged staff of the university to prioritize integrity and refrain from accepting gifts that could compromise their positions. Highlighting the consequences of false asset declarations, Mr. Okafor emphasized the importance of upholding public trust and avoiding conflicts of interest, stating the critical role of the Code of Conduct Act of 1999 in steering public office behavior. He outlined 14 essential codes tailored to govern and monitor the conduct of all public servants.

Similarly, the Assistant Registrar of Information and Publications Unit of University of Jos, Mr. Kelechi C. Onyemachi in his reaction, explained that administrators are seen as key policy makers in the system, they interpret University policy that make them in tune with rules and regulations governing the conduct of staff and students within the system.

He also noted that the program as created awareness on how public servants can own property or improve their source of income without any conflict of interest, at same time emphasized on need for employees to give their full attention to their jobs and avoid engaging in activities that would conflict with their duties.

Professor Lami Hannatu of the Faculty of veterinary Medicine also emphasized on the University commitment to ensuring that staff members adhere to ethical standards and the code of conduct for public officers, noting that the workshop has helped cover the ethical standards of the profession and the requirements for reporting assets and liabilities.

Furthermore, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya, along with the Registrar Dr Rejoice Songden were both presented with prestigious awards during the workshop which was received by Bulus Zaphania Ishaku on their behalf, underscoring their commitment to transparency and Code of Conduct of public service.

Professor Lami delivered a heartfelt closing remark, concluding the workshop with the stirring melodies of the University Anthem and the Nigerian National Anthem with many in attendance including the Deputy Dean, Faculty Officers, Heads of Departments and various University Unit Heads.
