The National Association of Plateau State Students(NAPSS), University of Jos chapter, through the office of the Treasurer, in collaboration with Meg Cancer Foundation, held a campaign and sensitization walk on breast cancer tagged: “Joining Hands To Fight Cancer and Save a Live Today” on Friday, 12 April, 2024 at the Village Hostel, University of Jos.
The guest speaker, Dakop Na’anlep, a 500 level student of Medicine and Surgery, emphasized that the goal of the program was to encourage students to get regular screenings, know the risk factors and support initiatives to improve early detection, treatment and support for those affected by breast cancer.
He highlighted some symptoms of breast cancer to include lump in the breast, body discharge from the nipple and changes in the shape of the breast. He urged students to visit their Doctors when they noticed any of the symptoms mentioned.
In the same vein, the NAPSS Treasurer, Datong Candida Katfuna’an, a 400 level student of Mass Communication, explained that she deemed the program appropriate for students to empower them with adequate knowledge on the disease, revealing that she had lost a close friend due to ignorance of the symptoms. She said “it will promote early detection, treatment and support initiatives for those affected”
Similarly, Celestina Na’anmiap, a 300 level student of History and International Studies, expressed her delight to the organizers of the event. She affirmed that the program was beneficial t, as it empowered her with knowledge on the disease.
Furthermore, Sharon Patrick, a 300 level student of Sociology, appreciated the organizers of the event and urged them to maintain the standard. She said she never knew anything much about breast cancer but the program revealed everything she needed to know
The event raised awareness and encouraged student to take actions that will help prevent and address increasing breast cancer cases in Nigeria.
