Naraguta Leather Works: A Beacon of Entrepreneurship in the University of Jos Community

 Nestled within the University of Jos community is a hidden gem – Naraguta Leather Works. A renowned leather industry steeped in tradition and excellence.

Founded by the visionary grandfather, Mr. Shuaibu Abdullahi in 1945, the establishment has long been synonymous with quality leather materials, serving clients both domestically and abroad.

However, the journey has not been without its challenges. In 2008, the industry faced a setback when the road leading to Naraguta Leather Works was unexpectedly blocked. This roadblock, imposed by the University of Jos authority, inadvertently painted the area as a danger zone which significantly impacted the flow of patronage to the industry.

Despite this obstacle, Naraguta Leather Works remained resilient, standing out with its distinctive craftsmanship and commitment to customer satisfaction.

Mr. Shuaibu Abdullahi, the current manager, reflected on the industry’s journey and its integral role in the university community. He lamented on the roadblock’s effect on business but remained optimistic about the future. “Naraguta Leather Works has been a cornerstone of our community for decades,” he remarked. “We’ve not only provided quality leather materials but also fostered entrepreneurship among our youth.”

Indeed, Naraguta Leather Works has been instrumental in nurturing entrepreneurial spirit among students. With over 5,000 individuals trained by the industry, many have gone on to establish their own ventures, both locally and internationally.

Mr. Wisyom Zacham Jonathan, an IT student from the Nigeria Institute of Leather and Science Technology, Zaria, attested to the invaluable experience gained during his time at Naraguta Leather Works. “The opportunity to learn and grow in such a vibrant environment has been invaluable,” he shared. “I’m grateful for the skills and knowledge I’ve acquired here.”

Naraguta Leather Works goes beyond traditional leather production, venturing into the production of artificial limbs. This diversification not only showcases their versatility but also underscores their commitment to serving diverse needs within the community.

As Naraguta Leather Works continues to thrive, it remains a beacon of entrepreneurship, innovation, and community resilience. Despite past challenges, the industry stands tall, inspiring generations to come with its unwavering dedication to craftsmanship and community upliftment.
