Sambo Peter Nancwat, the newly Sworn-in President of the Student Union Government of the University of Jos, in an exclusive interview with Unijos Echo reflected on his campaign journey and his vision for the Students.
How would you describe your victory?
“My victory is not a victory for one man, but a victory for Josites. I see not only a better future but also the readiness and energy to move the union from its present State to a better place. However, this can only be achieved with the involvement of every student”.
We learnt you are married, how do you intend to balance your marital life and students affairs?
“I wasn’t expecting this question, but then you asked, determination and zeal are the drive that got me here, I will like to make reference to the Vice chancellor who is married, yet an astute and competent leader. This is not limited to most of our lecturers who are also married. Being married hasn’t stopped them from being competent and exceptional, so I think my duty as the SUG president is the easiest, considering the fact that I am a young man. Trust me, serving Josites and being a good husband is a task I will balance to ensure no party is cheated”.
What are the agendas for this regime?
“My first and most important agenda is to get the Student Union working by improving the present State of situation. I understand our past leaders did their best, it is now our turn to do even more. Top of the agenda is student welfarism, most especially the hygiene and maintenance of various hostels. I will ensure the security measures are adhered to, by students both within and off campus. There are also serious plans concerning mobility, I believe it’s a necessity within the school that my administration must work to improve”.
Many students have lost hope in student government based on the last administration, what do you wish to do differently to rekindle their lost hope?
“Just like my campaign slogan “Trusted Experience” I believe Josites will experience a trusted regime. I came into the system to work and that I will do. I am not alone, God has chosen other executives and I to come to the rescue of Josites. We are capable and will execute all we have in store”.
What are your thoughts about the last regime?
“For me I think they did their best, leading the union is not an easy task, I believe they’ve played their role, and now it is the turn of this present regime to do much more. Challenges will come but then we need wisdom to be good leaders. The last regime was faced with a lot of turbulence and I can’t judge them with that, I can only say they did their best”.
What message do you have for josites?
“I’m aware that most Josites have lost hope in student leadership, but I’m appealing for their support to make this regime a success by working together. It’s only when we unite that we can move the union to attaining greater heights’’.
What do you have to say to other aspirants who lost in the election that you emerged the winner?
“The sky is wide enough and doors are open for everyone, I urge them to please give their support, because the sole aim is to move the Student Union to attaining greater height. This shouldn’t be a political tussle anymore, but a forum to achieving greatness for all student of the University of Jos”.
