The Youth Fellowship of the Chapel of Faith at the University of Jos, held a postgraduate seminar tagged, “The post graduation world” at the Chapel of Faith, University of Jos permanent site. The event aimed at equipping the postgraduate students with the necessary knowledge of the wider world to enable them succeed in their career paths.
Dr. Lucious, a medical practitioner in Jos University Teaching Hospital[JUTH], emphasized on the implications of planning as a graduate and also during NYSC.
He further expounded the fact that many students in the run to choose a supposed paying and favorable state of service will seek to re-work their place of deployment.
In addition, He encouraged participants, especially the final year students, to avoid such, rather, they should accept their place of deployment as the Will of God for their lives. “I met my wife during NYSC in Jigawa state. I had the plan to change my state but along the line I felt I should accept it. Now, I can vividly say God posted me to Jigawa to meet my wife in whom today we are fulfilling destiny together,” he revealed.
Dr. James Ben, in his speech, enlightened the participants to view their service year as a time to engage in volunteering works that will help them discover new things and learn new skills. “Volunteering for non-profit organizations has a way of opening you to destiny and opportunities”, he said.
He went further to advise the final year students to not live a one man life during their service year but to engage with other Christians from other Universities in the fellowship.
Mr Michael Paul, an alumnus of the University of Jos, encouraged the participants to always seek God and wait on Him to lead them as they are about to face the world. He shared how putting God first during his service year and after had helped him even in his profession.
“I didn’t struggle to get my current job. I sought God’s face during my service year and this really helped me not to be pressured or jump into every job opportunity that came my way”.
Mr. Paul, who is currently at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas, United States for a 6 months training shared how his patience and obedience to God has paved way for him. “Several job opportunities came my way which If I had jumped at them, I would have lost those jobs during Covid-19. By now, I would have been back to square zero, probably doing nothing or seeking jobs,” he revealed.
Mr. Ehis Onobun, a graduate of Architecture, Unijos, encouraged participants on acquiring skills for today and tomorrow. He talked about taking challenges up to filling gaps and learning skills on the go. He also talked about accessing opportunities and notifications with prudent use of professional, social media platforms like LinkedIn.
Ephraim, a 400 level student of the University of Jos who participated in the seminar expressed his joy. He viewed the seminar as a great privilege and opportunity to access helpful information shared during the sessions.
“I had always thought of life and how to secure a job as I rounded up my program, but today’s program had relieved me of my worries”.
He further revealed that he would love to look into the freelance job that Mr. Ehis talked about how he hopes to start engaging in remote jobs even before the end of his service year,”he said.
Ajagunna Ibidun Deborah, a 300 level student of Mass communication Unijos, who was also at the seminar, gave a remarkable comment about the organizers for hosting such an educative program. She mentioned that the seminar has provided her with deeper knowledge on how to prepare for life after school even though she still has a year to go.
“This program has opened my eyes more to the importance of planning, socializing and also the essence of putting God first as I pursue my career in life. God knows the best and He sees the future, I don’t. I only have a glimpse of what he has shown me,” she said.
