SUG ELECTON: MANIFESTO READING EVENT SETS THE STAGE

The Student Union Government (SUG) of the University of Jos hosted a spirited manifesto reading on November 13, 2024, at the Aliyu Akwai Doma Indoor Theatre, Naraguta campus.
The event was attended by high-profile university officials, students, and faculty members, and showcased a diverse field of over 15 candidates vying for key positions, including SUG president and sales secretary.
The five presidential candidates, Jane Kangyang Pwajok, Francis Perembo, Ayuba Chollom, Izam Samuel Musa, and Kiku Roy Magaji, presented their manifestos. In addition, two vice-presidential hopefuls, Mercy Oma and Benita Nyenge Uershia, addressed the audience, along with candidates for other SUG positions. Each candidate highlighted key priorities, including student welfare, campus facilities, academic support, and transparency.
Presidential aspirant, Jane Kangyang Pwajok, emphasized her commitment to mentorship and networking initiatives to broaden students’ horizons. Her plan also promises a focus on digital skills and financial literacy for all students. Meanwhile, Augustine Bulus Azi, aspiring Director of Sports, outlined an ambitious vision for enhancing sports programs and partnerships to elevate the university’s standing in Nigerian sports. Vice-presidential candidate Benita Uershia emphasized skill acquisition, aiming to empower students with practical abilities that extend beyond traditional classroom learning.
“I’m standing here not as a woman but as a leader,” Pwajok stated in response to a question, assuring fellow students of her commitment to leadership despite gender concerns. A query regarding student voting eligibility, tied to outstanding school fees, was addressed by the Deputy Dean, who clarified the university’s flexible part-payment policy. Some students cheered and applauded, while others expressed their dissatisfaction.
The event’s energy reflected the eagerness of the University of Jos Student Community to participate in shaping a responsive and forward-thinking SUG administration. Notable attendees included Dr. Ibrahim Othman, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs; Mr. Dashe Christopher Perat, President of the Faculty of Management Science Association (FOMSA) and event anchor; co-anchor Prof. Nancy King, Head of Department Theatre and Film Arts and Prof. Uchele Opkunachi, Head of the Department of Animal Production, among others.
