EDITORIAL- UNIJOS ADMISSION DELAY: A RECURRING CONCERN

The University of Jos (UniJos) admission process for the 2024/2025 academic session has been plagued by delays, sparking widespread concern among applicants. Despite the National Examinations Council (NECO) releasing its results, the university is yet to announce a date for the admission list. This development has led to an influx of prospective students flooding social media channels and the university premises seeking information.
The implications of this delay are far-reaching, necessitating an adjustment to the current academic calendar, which commenced on September 30, 2024, and is scheduled to end on September 8, 2025. This is not the first time the university has experienced admission delays. In the 2023/2024 session, a similar delay resulted in an additional two weeks of lectures for new students.
UniJos Echo acknowledges the university management’s efforts, particularly the Directorate of Academic Planning, to resolve this issue. However, we urge swift action to protect the university’s reputation as a preferred institution of choice for Nigerian students. The university’s public image is at stake, and prolonged delays can deter prospective students from considering UniJos in the future.
To prevent a repeat of last year’s scenario, UniJos Echo calls for collective action from departments, faculties, ICT, and relevant stakeholders to resolve this impasse and ensure a steady academic calendar. The university must prioritize timely admission processes to maintain its academic integrity and reputation.
We recommend that the university expedite the admission process, communicate regularly with applicants through official channels, review and adjust the academic calendar accordingly, and collaborate with stakeholders to prevent future delays. By taking immediate action, the university can mitigate the effects of this delay and ensure a seamless academic session.
Ultimately, the University of Jos must demonstrate its commitment to academic excellence and student satisfaction by addressing this issue promptly. We urge the management to take all necessary steps to resolve the admission delay and restore confidence in the university’s admission process.
