The Department of Mass Communication at the University of Jos has made remarkable progress since its inception in 2008, one of the highlights being the commissioning of newly built studio facilities in 2023. These facilities, equipped for both radio and television broadcasting, have given rise to the Mass Communication TV (MCTV). It is designed to provide a foundation for practical learning and aim to equip students with professional skills and experience. However, UniJos Echo is deeply concerned about the apparent indifference displayed by some students towards this valuable resource.
The studio was envisioned as a hub of creativity and practical engagement, offering students an avenue to complement their theoretical knowledge with real-world application. Unfortunately, this vision has not been fully realized. Lack of students’ engagement has left the facility somewhat underutilized. These setbacks have not only limited the students’ ability to hone their skills but have also left lecturers struggling to deliver quality education without the necessary resources.
UniJos Echo believes that these challenges can be addressed with targeted reforms to restore the studio to its intended purpose. Such efforts would not only enhance the studio’s functionality but also boost the department’s reputation. Additionally, extending the studio’s use to other departments, such as Marketing, Criminology, and others, would foster collaboration and establish the facility as a vital resource for the university as a whole.
The first step in this process is expanding the studio’s reach to support practical learning for other departments whose coursework would benefit from access to such facilities. This interdisciplinary approach would not only maximize the studio’s potential but also promote a culture of shared growth and innovation.
Furthermore, students must recognize that the studio is designed with their development at its core. It prioritizes student-centered learning, offering hands-on experience, mentorship, and constructive feedback. By actively engaging with the facility, students can gain the skills, creativity, and knowledge required to excel in their chosen fields.
In conclusion, the growth and effective utilization of the department’s studio require a collective effort. Addressing the current challenges, implementing the proposed reforms, and fostering a shared vision will transform the studio into a vibrant center for learning and innovation. This investment is not merely in infrastructure but in the future of the students and the institution.
UniJos Echo calls on students to embrace the studio’s offerings and urges management to continue taking decisive actions to create a world-class learning environment. Together, we can ensure the studio fulfills its potential as a benchmark for academic and professional excellence.
