The program emphasizes hands-on learning, encouraging students to explore their interests and develop practical solutions to real-world challenges. It also offers a variety of postgraduate options, including diplomas, masters and doctoral degrees in specialized areas like Production Engineering and Energy Studies.
With a clear vision to be recognized as a top-tier Mechanical Engineering program in Nigeria and globally competitive, the department aligns its mission with the University’s broader goals. “Our curriculum integrates foundational courses, practical workshops, and cutting-edge research opportunities,” Dr. Kamtu explained.

To address these, the university has formed partnerships with institutions such as Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, providing students access to better-equipped laboratories.
Innovative collaborations with organizations like Auto Gas Nigeria are also being explored, focusing on gas conversion technologies and community training.
Additionally, through its entrepreneurship centers, the department engages roadside mechanics in skill-enhancement programs, bridging the gap between formal education and informal practices. The resilience and ambition of the department’s students are inspiring.
According to a 500-level student, Regina Emmanuel, studying mechanical engineering was an unexpected journey.
“I didn’t apply for the course, but I’ve learned to love it,” she shared.
Regina credits the program for broadening her thinking capacity and preparing her for a future where robotics and automation will play pivotal roles.
Similarly, a 400-level student Abdullahi Mafada shared how classroom knowledge empowered him to solve real-world problems.
“There was a car I couldn’t fix in my workshop for a month, but what I learned in class helped me identify and resolve the issue,” he recounted.
For others like Onyeka Stanley and Gladys Luka, the program extends beyond technical skills to personal growth and faith. Onyeka, a 200-level student, dreams of opening his own workshop, while Gladys believes divine intervention led her to the course after years of applying to study Nursing.
The department’s five-year undergraduate program leads to a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree, featuring a rigorous curriculum that includes foundational courses, workshops, and final-year projects. This prepares students for the demands of the industry.
Its postgraduate programs continue this legacy, offering advanced studies in fields such as Industrial and Production Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, and Thermofluids.
These programs are supported by distinguished faculty conducting cutting-edge research in robotics, thermodynamics, and materials science.
