The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) unit at the University of Jos has been working tirelessly to provide students with practical experience in their various fields of study. Despite facing significant financial challenges, the unit remains committed to its mission.

In an interview with Prof. David L. Prof. Wonang highlighted that almost all science courses participate in SIWES, and more departments are trying to enroll in the program. He noted that students improve significantly after completing their SIWES programs, gaining valuable experience that enhances their skills and knowledge.

However, the SIWES program faces significant financial challenges. Prof. Wonang lamented that the program is underfunded, with supervisors often using their own money to ensure proper supervision. He cited the example of the #20 per kilometer reimbursement for official travels, which is grossly inadequate.

Another challenge the unit face is the enrollment of new courses in the SIWES program. Prof. Wonang mentioned that the Plant Science department, formerly known as Botany, has not been enrolled in the program due to its name change. Despite being accredited by the National University Commission (NUC), the department has not received sponsorship from the Industrial Training Fund (ITF).

Prof. Wonang emphasized the importance of building relationships with industries and organizations where students undertake their SIWES programs. He also highlighted the quarterly zonal meetings and annual conferences that bring together SIWES directors from various universities to discuss challenges and share best practices.

Despite the challenges, the SIWES unit at the University of Jos has achieved impressive results. Prof. Wonang proudly mentioned that University of Jos students were the best in the last SIWES program evaluation. He hopes to develop a system to record and showcase the achievements of outstanding students, which will give them an edge in the job market.

Students who have participated in the SIWES program have expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to gain practical experience. Audu Moses Bigbok, a Zoology student, hopes to develop skills and confidence during his SIWES program.

Juliet Akumuo, another zoology student, expects to learn practically and carry out research that will benefit her in the future. Luka Jude Jock said he hopes to get practical knowledge which he will add to his theorical knowledge of zoology. He futher shared that the SIWES program will boost his future carreer in the nurturing of wildlife and he hopes to gain knew skills and new knowledge about his field of study. Kudrat Abdullateef, a student of zoology Department University of Jos said, “I expect to gain hands-on experience, develop industry relevant skills and better understand how my academic knowledge applies to real world challenges from my SIWES program.” She also stated that she has an interest in parasitology which is a field under zoology and to gain exposure and enhance her skills for future professional opportunities.

As the University of Jos SIWES unit continues to navigate financial challenges, it remains committed to providing students with valuable practical experience. With the dedication of Prof. Wonang and his team, the unit is poised to continue producing outstanding results and equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their chosen careers.
