The journey of the Computer Science Department at the University of Jos has been one of remarkable growth and transformation. Initially introduced as part of the Department of Mathematics during the 2001/2002 academic session, Computer Science was formally established as an independent department in 2012/2013. This milestone was made possible through approvals from the University Senate and the National Universities Commission (NUC), reflecting the increasing significance of the discipline in today’s world.
Leadership and Growth
Professor T. Ishaya served as the department’s pioneer head from 2012 to 2016, laying the foundation for its development. He was succeeded by Professor Choji Davou Nyap (2016–2021), and since February 2021, Professor Nachamada Vachaku Blamah has taken the reins. Despite being one of the youngest departments in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Computer Science has shown exceptional progress, culminating in its elevation to a full-fledged faculty—a transformation that promises significant advancements for the institution.
Visions for the Future
Dr. G. Thomas, former Exams Officer for Computer Science and now Head of the Cybersecurity Department under the new faculty, shared his optimistic vision. He revealed that within the next five years, new departments such as Software Engineering, Computer Information Systems, and Cybersecurity Science will be fully operational, complete with admissions and graduating classes. A dedicated faculty building at the permanent site is also expected, alongside research centers focusing on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and ICT for societal development.
Dr. Thomas emphasized the need for foundational courses like Python programming, software development, and coding at the 100-level to simplify learning for students. He also discussed plans to transition from the traditional curriculum to the CCMass system, introducing unique, context-specific courses tailored to the new Departments.
“I am excited about this upgrade,” he stated. “It’s a significant milestone, and I look forward to exploring the opportunities it brings for students and staff alike.”
Students React
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among students. Elisha Tomo Maxwell, the current Director of Socials for the department, expressed both joy and regret. “I’m happy about this development, but it feels late for me as I’m about to graduate. For the new students, this is a golden opportunity, and I urge them to make the most of it,” he said.
Marvelous Modupe, a 300-level student, described the transition as “amazing.” he believes the specialization offered by the new faculty will greatly benefit incoming students. “I wish I could start over as a 100-level student to explore these new opportunities,” he remarked.
Similarly, Nanko Barko, another 300-level student, hailed the upgrade as a major improvement. “Technology is vast, and creating a faculty allows for more focus and better learning. I wish this had come sooner; I would have loved to study Software Engineering and dive into programming and coding,” she said. She also expressed hope for more practical engagement, moving beyond the “PDF-centered” teaching methods currently in use.
A Step Forward for the University and Beyond
The accreditation of the new faculty reflects the University of Jos’s commitment to education and innovation. With the global reliance on technology increasing, equipping students with cutting-edge knowledge and skills is essential not just for the university, but for the nation and the world.
The journey from a department within Mathematics to an independent faculty represents more than just growth—it signifies the institution’s dedication to nurturing talent and addressing the challenges of the digital age. As the Faculty of Computing emerges, it sets the stage for groundbreaking advancements in research, education, and societal impact.
